Reason for vulcanising

Uncured rubber is sticky if warm and brittle if cold. It may be easily deformed. The reason for the non elastic properties is the free moveability of the polymer chains independent from each other. By the process of vulcani­sation cross links are formed between those chains and thus the free moving of them is reduced. As a result the rubber article will yield to stress or compression and returns to its original shape as soon as the deformation force is released.

Vulcanisation is a specific curing process for rubber carried out at elevated temperature and the addition of sul­phur or may be another equivalent like Tellur, Selen, sulphur donator peroxides etc. Sulphur is the most common ingredient. In a radical reaction the double bonds of the poly isoprene chains are broken up and react with the sulphur, forming cross links between adjacent chains. During the heating the original eight member sulphur bonds are reduced in its lengths and the free sulphur atoms form additional cross links. Depending on the degree of cross linkage the resulting article is softer or more rigid and performs in any event elastomeric character. The surface is also at elevated temperature not sticky any longer and the glass transition temperature is reduced as well.

Our vulcansiation process

Here are various vulcanization methods. Hither to, the industrially dominating vulcanizing methods for natural latex foam were and still are the DUNLOP process and the THALALY process, both have a number disadvantages, which can be summarized as follows:

1. High energy consumption
2. Voluminous and high-weight moulds made of Aluminium and steel
3. High investment costs for plant and machinery
4. Danger of corrosion by extensive use of steam and water
5. Inflexibility in product change due to time consuming and cost intensive manufacture of moulds

Our newly developed vulcanization process involves heating by a “High Frequency” electric field, applied with the help of a patented process. Moulds are made of special plastic materials at considerably lower costs and available at short notice. The quality of the foam corresponds to the established industrial standards, density and other important characteristics can be adapted in accordance with the requirements of the end-user.
